What you need to know about a new rail car, trailer and trailer hitch on the road
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on Tuesday announced that he will propose to Congress a new federal program that would replace freight wheeled vehicles, trailer hitch and trailer trailers with a new type of rail car.
Foxx’s proposal comes after several months of debate over how to improve rail access and reliability in the wake of deadly derailments in the Midwest.
The Trump administration has long argued that the rail car should not be used on long distances and has said that freight trucks are not suitable for such trips.
Foxx said he believes that the current rail cars can handle some short-distance trips.
The new rail cars will be smaller and more reliable than existing freight cars, he said, and will be able to travel at speeds of up to 30 mph.
The proposal is expected to be approved by Congress and be put on the books by the end of the year.
It is also expected to help the U.S. economy by improving freight transport capacity and providing jobs to workers. Fox.com
