Truck owner dies after falling off trailer
A truck driver died after falling from his trailer while picking up freight on a busy highway in southern Ontario, authorities said Wednesday.
A spokesman for the Transportation Safety Board said the accident happened Tuesday afternoon when the operator of the trailer, who was not named, fell and fell on the truck’s front end.
The truck was traveling at 65 km/h (40 mph) on a stretch of Highway 5 north of Toronto when the driver lost control and went airborne, the safety board said.
The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but did not survive, it said.
An investigation was underway, the board said, and it could take several days to determine what happened.
Ontario Provincial Police said in a statement that the driver of the truck had been driving the trailer for a number of years.
“There is no indication that the vehicle is involved in any type of accident,” the statement said.
Ontarians will receive a “limited” amount of relief from the provincial gasoline tax starting Jan. 1.
