When battery dies, freight shipping will be able to move on to other options
Transport for London, the UK’s largest freight operator, said its terminals would soon be able in the event of a battery fire.
The move follows a successful demonstration of the technology by a group of freight terminals in the US in October.
The company said the batteries could be transported by sea or by air, although no details were given.
The move comes a month after another UK container ship lost power and was lost to the sea.
The British ship, the Royal Lighthouse, was carrying more than a million tonnes of cargo from China.
The Lighthouse was due to arrive in Hamburg on Sunday and has since been sent to Hamburg for further repairs.
